Wilderness Therapy
What is Wilderness Therapy?
Wilderness Therapy is a means by which to help individuals overcome mental health obstacles through outdoor individual or group activities. Our clients learn about team building, how to overcome low self-esteem, and to alleviate stress, depression, and anxiety. Wilderness Therapy is suitable for children, teens, and adults. In our programs, we use hiking and mountaineering as a means to combat issues and learn new coping strategies. Clients will participate in an outside activity such as hiking, backpacking, and mountaineering. During our time together, children and teens will learn how to work together to overcome obstacles and how to increase their self-esteem and motivational skills. Adults will be able to reduce stress and anxiety in a natural environment while talking with the therapist.
How Does It Work?
During hikes, the counselor will address client’s specific topics/concerns. Everyone will learn strategies together to overcome some of the problems they are experiencing. We try to create an environment that is cohesive and that makes everyone feel safe and connected. Clients will also learn about nature/outside and the benefits it can have on our mental health and overall well-being. Clients learn valuable life lessons such as cooperating with others, working as a team, and the impact of natural consequences due to poor choices. We offer more than one program, so take a look at the options we have available and see what best suits you, your child or teen’s needs.
What Makes Wilderness Therapy Unique?
The purpose of the programs is to provide counseling but in a positive and natural environment. We believe face to face counseling is beneficial, however, it is also scientifically proven that getting outdoors and staying active has a significant effect on mental health and general well-being. While out on the trail, individuals will still get all the advantages of a counseling session and they will be able to speak to the therapist as they normally would in the office setting. While hiking, the therapist and client will come up with solutions to problems. We will talk through problems, and we will provide guidance and support.
